I Didn’t Understand Any of This Either

Quantum, advanced manufacturing and deep tech are often discussed in ways that feel complex and difficult to access. This session takes a different approach. It breaks down what these technologies actually are, why they matter, and what is already happening across Sussex today, translating complex ideas into clear, grounded explanations without losing their depth. The session then opens into a live panel, bringing together voices from research, industry and investment to explore how deep tech moves from early breakthroughs into real-world application. Through direct questions and audience interaction, the discussion examines timelines, trade-offs, risks and opportunities, and how people are responding to them in practice. Rather than focusing on theory, the session is designed to make the conversation more accessible, challenge assumptions and create a clearer understanding of how these technologies are developing. It closes by positioning Sussex as an emerging centre for deep tech, highlighting the conditions required for growth and how individuals and organisations can engage with the ecosystem.
